WASHINGTON (CN) - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed a rule that recognizes a subspecies of the endangered willowy monardella - a member of the mint family - as a separate species to be known as Jennifer's monardella.
The willowy monardella will retain the endangered status granted to the species under the Endangered Species Act in 1973, while the new species will not be protected under the act because it is more widespread than previously thought.
For the first time the agency has proposed to designate to designate 348 acres in San Diego County, Calif., as a critical habitat for the endangered willowy monardella.
