WASHINGTON (CN) - The Utah valvata snail is not endangered after all, according to a finding by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to remove the denizens of the Snake River from the federal List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife.
The valvata snail was listed as endangered in 1992 on evidence that it was found only in and around cold-water springs and spring outflows above and below the Minkdoka Damn in the Hagerman Valley of Idaho.
More recent evidence has shown that the snail is distributed discontinuously across 255 miles of the Snake River in a variety of aquatic settings including deep and shallow pools in temperatures ranging from under 40 degrees to 75 degrees, according to the agency finding.
In addition, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game has found the valvata snail in slack water reservoirs behind damns on the Snake River that previously were thought to be inhospitable to the snail.
