Endangered Trout

WASHINGTON (CN) - In a split decision for fish fans, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced it intends to deny a petition to list the Bonneville cutthroat trout as a threatened or endangered species, while it intends to retain the listed status of the Lahonan cutthroat trout.

The Bonneville cutthroat, according to the service, enjoys fair, good or excellent habitat in 80 percent of its range and existing regulatory mechanisms at the state and federal levels are sufficient to conserve and enhance the population of the fish.

The Lahonan cutthroat, on the other hand, will continue to receive federal protection, since no evidence was found, according to the service, to suggest that the Truckee River generates sufficient water flow to sustain a naturally reproducing Lahonan population in the Truckee-Pyramid Lake Basin.
