Endangered Species

WASHINGTON (CN) - Since the Center for Biological Diversity took the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to court, the agency is again reviewing whether the roundtail chub of the lower Colorado River basin are a "threatened" species under the Endangered Species Act.

Initially, the service determined that the chub in the basin were not distinct from nearby chub, so if the fish died out as a result of river development for energy and water use, there would still be other fish left that were just like them.

The USFWS is interested in receiving information regarding the status of, and any potential threats to, the roundtail chub over its entire range. This information is due by April 2.
