WASHINGTON (CN) - The U.S. District Court ordered the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to make "expeditious progress" toward putting certain foreign birds on the endangered species list.
These birds, along with others, face threats that are imminent and high in magnitude, according to the agency, but have not yet been protected under the Endangered Species Act because of other agency priorities.
The foreign bird species listed in the court order are: the Chilean woodstar, Andean flamingo, medium tree-finch, black-breasted puffleg, and the St. Lucia forest thrush. The FWS now will begin the rulemaking process to protect 30 foreign species, including these. The protection of the birds was requested by public petition.
