WASHINGTON (CN) - The black abalone has been listed as deserving of protection under the Endangered Species Act by the National Marine Fisheries Service.
The once prolific sea snail has been decimated by over fishing, and a wasting disease that may become worse in warmer waters. The agency requests information relevant to designating the habitat the mollusks would need to survive as a species.
The petition for listing the abalone was submitted by the Center for Biological Diversity.
