JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (CN) - A threatening email that mentioned former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords kept the state Capitol on edge this week, but it came to an end after the emailer apologized.
The original email came into the office of State Senate President Pro Tem Rob Mayer, R-Dexter, around 4 a.m. Tuesday, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
The email complained about gas prices and in a vulgar way questioned the fortitude of four state senators.
The email, according to Mayer's office, also asked: "Hey, how is Giffords?"
The mention of Giffords, who survived an assassination attempt in January 2011, meant more concerns for a Capitol that already on edge from a January incident. Police are still investigating that incident, in which three of the same state Senate members mentioned in the recent email found orange "target" stickers on the entrances of their Capitol offices.
Police tracked the email to a house in eastern Missouri, which apparently prompted a retraction from the emailer. The second email issued an apology for the first one and said that no harm was intended.
There is no word on whether charges will be filed.
