A marvel to behold in the daylight, the Eiffel Tower shines at night. Designed and built by engineer Gustave Eiffel, "la dame de fer" ("iron lady") surpassed the Washington Monument to become the tallest structure in the world — a title it held for 41 years until the Chrysler Building was completed in 1930. The Eiffel Tower is also the most-visited paid monument in the world, with nearly 7 million visitors climbing its wrought-iron lattice every year. (Courthouse News photo / William Dotinga)
