WASHINGTON (CN) - West Nile virus, Malaria and tuberculosis are three of nine diseases that the Department of Veterans Affairs proposes to add to the list of ailments presumed to be connected to military service.
Veterans who served in Southwest Asia during certain periods would be able to get care for the long term effects of these diseases, if the proposed rule is adopted, unless lack of a connection is shown.
The diseases are: Brucellosis, Campylobacter jejuni, Coxiella burnetii (Q fever), Malaria, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Nontyphoid Salmonella, Shigella, Visceral leishmaniasis, and West Nile virus.
The proposed rule also would provide guidance regarding long-term health effects associated with these diseases.
