(CN) – A French court has ordered eBay to pay $61 million (38.6 million euros) in damages to LVMH, which argued, successfully, that most of the Louis Vuitton handbags and Dior perfumes sold through eBay are fakes. The decision Monday came a month after another French court ordered eBay to pay Hermes 20,000 euros ($31,600) for sales of counterfeit Hermes handbags.
eBay also faces lawsuits from Tiffany jewelers and L’Oreal cosmetics on similar claims.
The Conseil de Ventes, which represents French auctioneers, also has sued eBay, claiming it is ducking laws regulating auctions by claiming to be a broker.
LVMH, named for Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy, is partly owned by the Christian Dior Group.
