E. Coli & Bottled Water

WASHINGTON (CN) - The FDA plans to disallow water contaminated with fecal matter, as sources for bottled water.

After the change, "bottled water containing E. coli would be considered adulterated, and source water containing E. coli would not be considered to be of a safe, sanitary quality and would be prohibited from use in the production of bottled water," according to the Food and Drug Administration proposal.

This rule also would require bottlers to eliminate the cause of E. coli in source water and keep records of these actions.

The FDA has tentatively concluded that, with the changes, the minimum standards for bottled water, as regarding fecal contamination, would be as protective of public health as those set for public drinking water.
