LOS ANGELES (CN) - Former New York Mets outfielder Lenny Dykstra received a three-year prison sentence Monday after pleading no contest to grand theft auto and filing a false financial statement.
Dykstra was charged with committing identity theft to steal or lease multiple vehicles. Prison is the latest obstacle to befall the 49-year-old baseball star, who was recently confined to a sober-living facility.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Dykstra unsuccessfully tried to change his plea and fight the charges at last minute. Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Cynthia Ulfig said Dykstra had plenty of time to prove his innocence.
Dykstra still faces bankruptcy fraud charges, slated for trial this summer.
Dykstra, 48, filed for bankruptcy in July 2009, listing $30 million in debts with just $50,000 in assets.
Prosecutors say Nails, as he was known to fans of the Mets and Phillies, looted more than $400,000 in assets from his mansion.
