WASHINGTON (CN) - The Bureau of Customs and Border Protection will allow owners of duty-free shops to use electronic inventory reporting if their inventory systems can track, by bar code, merchandise on which duty has already been paid or is of U.S. origin.
The change will also ease restrictions requiring the physical separation of duty-paid merchandise and other merchandise, and the physical marking of merchandise as duty-paid.
The agency intends that these changes, effective Jan. 28, will reduce costs for the owners of duty-free shops and will eliminate requirements made obsolete by inventory tracking technology.
