THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Dutch national railway company NS says it will pay reparations to Jews, Roma and Sinti whom it transported to camps in the Netherlands during World War II — from where they were sent to Nazi concentration camps.
NS President-Director Rogier van Boxtel, announced the move Wednesday, saying it will affect thousands of Holocaust survivors and the direct family of victims and cost the company tens of millions of dollars.
NS says in a statement that its role in transporting Jews and other minorities to camps on orders of Nazi occupiers during World War II is a "black page in the history of the company."
The company apologized in 2005 for its role in the transportations. It set up a commission last year to investigate how best to pay reparations.
