CLEVELAND (CN) - Dueling lawsuits have been filed over rights to "Care Bears" and other intellectual properties, including "Strawberry Shortcake." American Greetings Corp. and Those Characters From Cleveland sued Cookie Jar Entertainment in Cuyahoga County Court, and Cookie Jar sued them back in Manhattan Federal Court.
In Cleveland, American Greetings claims Cookie Jar agreed to pay $195 million for rights to "Care Bears," "Strawberry Shortcake," and "Sushi Pack," but couldn't complete the deal for lack of financing.
In New York, Cookie Jar demands $25 million from American Greetings, Those Characters From Cleveland, Mike Young Productions, and MoonScoop, claiming the defendants are trying to deliver the rights to MoonScoop.
Both lawsuits were filed Wednesday. Cookie Jar is represented in New York by Robert Abrahams with Schulte Roth. American Greetings is represented in Cleveland by Diamond Mace with Squire, Sanders & Dempsey.
