Dredged Material Sites OK’d at Newport Ore.

WASHINGTON (CN) - The Environmental Protection Agency has designated two new spots offshore of Yaquina Bay, Oregon as dredged material disposal sites, according to a new rule.

The most likely group to be affected would be the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, as it dredges the Yaquina River navigation channel, the rule says.

The newly designated sites are subject to ongoing monitoring and management to ensure continued protection of the marine environment, according to the designation.

The new sites are in approximately 112 to 152 feet of water, one each on the north and south of the entrance to the bay, on the central Oregon Coast, near Newport, Ore. Each site is 6,500 feet by 4,000 feet, equaling about 597 acres each, according to the designation.

The designation of the sites does not substitute for obtaining a permit to use a site, the rule says.
