SAN FRANCISCO (CN) - A man tricked investors into sinking $3 million into his sound effects company by pretending to be a three-time Oscar winner, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences claims in Federal Court.
Brice Carrington pleaded guilty to wire fraud and tax evasion, after using a fake Oscar statuette as a prop to help carry out the scheme, according to the complaint.
The Academy, which jealously guards rights to the Oscar statue, says it discovered Carrington's peccadillo in a San Francisco Chronicle article. The Chronicle reported that Carrington paid a jeweler in Walnut Creek a "substantial sum" for an Oscar replica. Carrington refused to reveal the jeweler's identity.
The Academy sued Carrington for copyright infringement. It is represented by David Quinto with Quinn Emanuel of Los Angeles.
