Domino’s Pizza Accused Of Racial Bias in Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (CN) - Domino's Pizza refuses to accept checks for purchases from black customers in black neighborhoods in Birmingham, but it accepts checks from white customers in white areas, a class action claims in Federal Court.

"Defendants have an allegedly facially neutral corporate policy that allows some stores to accept checks as payment for merchandise/services, while allowing others to refuse to accept checks as payment," the complaint states. "This policy has disparate impact/treatment on stories located in predominantly African-American neighborhoods and the individuals who patronize those stores. ... Defendants' unlawful discrimination against plaintiffs and putative class members is representative of a system-wide pattern and practice of racial discrimination created and maintained by defendants to deny customers the right to contract and obtain equal treatment under the law based on race."

Plaintiffs demand punitive damages and an injunction. They are represented by Gregory Wiggins with Wiggins, Childs, Quinn.
