DOJ Won’t Challenge|Global News Service

(CN) - The Justice Department on Wednesday cleared MyWire's proposal for a subscription Internet news aggregation service called Global News Service. The DOJ said the news service had few likely downsides and several possible benefits, including greater news access for consumers and potentially lower content-distribution costs for online publishers.

Global News Service would allow consumers to view related content from various Internet publishers, including articles and video and audio clips. By subscribing to the independent service, publishers could post a "related-item content block" of linked abstracts to content from other sites, the DOJ says. Consumers could then browse the related content by following the links.

"Global News Service has the potential to benefit consumers by allowing them to access a broad network of related content without having to conduct their own online searches," said Christine Varney, assistant attorney general in charge of the DOJ's antitrust division.

MyWire said it plans to strike content-licensing agreements with several online publishers and will allow consumers to use the service for free for viewing free content.

MyWire's CEO is Louis H. Borders, founder of Borders Books & Music. According to the company's Web site, MyWire uses search and indexing algorithms to create subscription-based packages of "professionally created content from hundreds of publications," including books, magazines, newspapers, radio and TV.
