(CN) - The Justice Department said Friday that it is reviewing the Orlando Police Department's response to Omar Mateen's attack on a gay nightclub in June.
Mateen killed 49 people and wounded scores of others before dying in a gun battle with police. But ever since the June 12 shootings at the Pulse nightclub, the city police department has faced question about how it handled the siege and why it waited three hours to send in a SWAT team to bring an end to the mayhem.
The DOJ said it will reviewed he departments strategies and tactics and also look at its officers' overall preparedness.
The review will be led by the Justice Department's Community Oriented Policing Services office, which offers technical assistance to departments who have experienced high-profile events and emergencies.
Orlando Police Chief John Mina requested the federal review, said Ronald Davis, director of the COPS office.
The lessons learned from the review will benefit not only Orlando police but "provide all law enforcement critical guidance and recommendations for responding to future such incidents," Davis said in a statement.
