DOE Wants Water |Heated More Efficiently

WASHINGTON (CN) - Increased efficiency in gas fired domestic water heaters, commercial direct heating equipment, and swimming pool heaters could result in cumulative greenhouse gas emission reductions of 167 million tons of carbon dioxide from 2013 to 2045, according to standards proposed by the Department of Energy.

The proposed standards also would be expected to result in reduction in cumulative nitrogen oxides emissions of 129 kilotons.

In addition, the DOE's analyses indicate that the proposed standards would save an estimated 2.85 quads of cumulative energy over the next 30 years or the equivalent to 61 days of U.S. gasoline use.

The DOE believes that these savings can be achieved with existing technology particularly with simple design solutions such as increasing the wraparound insulation for storage type water heaters, use of foam insulation, and increasing the surface area of heat exchangers.
