ELIZABETH, N.J. (CN) - Prison Health Services fired a doctor for objecting to its systematic denial of medical care to Union County Jail inmates, Dr. Arthur Siegel claims in Union County Court. He claims the defendants' regional director told him, "economic viability is our primary concern before patient care," in violation of ethical, professional and legal standards.
Dr. Siegel also sued Prison Health Services' subsidiary, Correctional Health Services.
Siegel claims the defendants refused to allow inmates to see specialists though they needed it; refused to administer necessary medicine but offered a cheaper one that may not work, or refused medicine outright; allowed nurses to prescribe medicine without a physician's supervision and without a license; among other things.
He claims the defendants fired him when he told them he was required to report them to the New Jersey Department of Correction and the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners.
