ALEXANDRIA, VA. (CN) - After merging with WellPoint, Amgen fired a doctor to retaliate for his truthful testimony that the company fixed prices on cancer drugs and paid kickbacks to doctors who used them, Dr. Randy Axelrod claims in Federal Court. Axelrod, a vice president since 2003, says Amgen disguised its kickbacks as "rebates," and that the "direct kickback to the medical provider was tied to the amount of Amgen's drug that the medical provider used with all cancer patients in the medical provider's practice." He says the drugs include Aranesp, Procrit, Neulasta and Neupogen.
