LAS VEGAS (CN) - The doctor linked to Southern Nevada's hepatitis C outbreak has filed for bankruptcy, automatically halting hundreds of civil lawsuits against him by former patients who complained of unsafe injection practices, including reusing syringes and vials of anesthesia.
In his Chapter 11 filing, Dipak Desai claimed assets of more than $22 million, including $18 million in investments, a $2 million home in Las Vegas and $1.1 million in his bank account.
His liabilities include a $1.2 million mortgage and a total of a little more than $700,000 for legal fees and a medical malpractice claim.
The first trial against Dipak Desai was set for May 3.
Desai's clinics, which were accused of reusing syringes and vials of Propofol, filed for bankruptcy last summer. They included the Gastroenterology Center of Nevada, Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada and Desert Shadow Endoscopy Center.
The Southern Nevada Health District's 2-year investigation found that at least 115 patients were infected with hepatitis C because of unsafe injection practices at the Endoscopy Center and Desert Shadow clinics. Nine of those cases were linked to the clinics.
Hundreds of patients have since filed suit.
