DNA Samples

WASHINGTON (CN) - DNA samples soon may be taken on arrest, along with fingerprints, according to a Department of Justice proposed regulation.

Under the rule, processed DNA samples would be entered into the FBI's Combined DNA Index System for anyone arrested, facing charges, or convicted, or detained under U.S. authority, such as illegal aliens facing deportation.

Early collection should allow authorities to match arrestees with crime scene data to determine if a likely suspect has been caught, connect the arrestee with other crimes, and help judges determine if a suspect should remain in custody pending trial. Collection from detainees would allow authorities to test all processed U.S. crime scene DNA against the DNA of illegal aliens before they leave the country. Early collection also may deter arrestees and detainees from later committing rape, murder, or other felonies that could be connected to them through a DNA match.
