BELLEVILLE, Ill. (CN) - A Roman Catholic diocese has posted a $5.9 million bond to cover damages awarded to a former altar boy who was sexually abused by a priest.
A jury ruled in James Wisniewski's favor in August. Wisniewski said he had been sexually abused by the Rev. Raymond Kownacki for five years during the 1970s and that the diocese concealed Kownacki's behavior by quietly shuffling him between parishes without warning parishioners.
The Diocese of Belleville posted the bond, which includes the $5 million awarded to Wisniewski and two years of interest in case a pending appeal fails.
