Developer, Attorneys Fight Long Distance

(CN) - The Fulbright & Jaworski law firm claims in court that Las Vegas-based land developer Verano Land Group owes it $521,000 in legal fees.

Fulbright & Jaworski sued Verano in Bexar County Court, San Antonio, after Verano sued the law firm and Verano's former managers last week in Clark County Court, Las Vegas.

In its complaint in Las Vegas, Verano claims Fulbright & Jaworski and its managers used their control over the developer "to pursue their own agendas" in a 2,500=acre development in San Antonio, including 700 acres the developer donated to the new Texas A&M University campus. Verano claims the law firm never waived its conflicts of interest, in having both Texas A&M University and the city of San Antonio as longstanding clients.

"Although VLG's [Verano Land Group's] limited partners had consented and agreed to the concept of donating land to the university for its construction of this campus, their understanding was that this donation would be limited to no more than 400 acres," Verano said in its complaint. "The increase in the acreage for this donation was agreed to without the consent and approval of VLG's limited partners."

Verano claims the defendants took other undisclosed and unapproved actions for the benefit of Texas A&M that did not make economic sense, such as constructing a clock tower on campus and donating another 40 acres for soccer fields.

George Scofield, partner in charge of Fulbright & Jaworski's San Antonio office, told the San Antonio Express-News: "These businessmen should not think they can come to Texas, obtain help in establishing a highly successful development and then run back to Nevada and refuse to fully pay the people who made their project a success."

Fulbright & Jaworski demands $521,216 in legal fees, plus interest and costs of suit. It is represented by Robert G. Newman, with its San Antonio office.
