Detroit Mayor Pleads Guilty, Resigns

DETROIT (CN) - Kwame Kilpatrick pleaded guilty to felony charges today and will resign after defiantly resisting calls to do just that for months. The plea deal ends a 7-month soap opera and will send Kilpatrick to jail for 4 months. Wayne County Circuit Court Judge David Groner also fined Kilpatrick $1 million.

Kilpatrick admitted he lied under oath, to obstruct justice, in trying to cover up his affair with his chief of staff and their roles in the firing of a deputy police chief. The city ended up paying millions of dollars to police officers.

Former Chief of Staff Christine Beatty was charged, like Kilpatrick, with perjury, misconduct and obstruction of justice. She is scheduled to appear in court next week. But Judge Groner told newspaper reporters that a plea deal in that case looks likely.Kilpatrick will be formally sentenced on Oct. 28. He must announce his resignation immediately, to take effect within two weeks
