Dems Win House Seats in Newly Drawn Pennsylvania Districts

Democrats picked up a key House seat in Pennsylvania with Conor Lamb’s victory over Republican Rep. Keith Rothfus in the state’s 17th Congressional District.

(CN) – Democrats picked up a key House seat in Pennsylvania with Conor Lamb’s victory over Republican Rep. Keith Rothfus in the state’s 17th Congressional District.

The race was notable in that two incumbents were running for the same seat after a court ordered district lines be redrawn before the election.

Rothfus, who held an advantage in his old district which leaned heavily Republican, did not have the same advantage in the new district.

In Pennsylvania's 5th Congressional District, Democrat Mary Scanlon defeated Republican Pearl Kim in a district that was controlled by a Republican until district lines were redrawn.

The candidates were vying for a district formerly held by Republican Pat Meehan who resigned in April amid an investigation into him allegedly using tax money to settle a sexual harassment complaint.

In the state’s redrawn 4th Congressional District, Democrat Madeleine Dean beat out Republican Dan David.

Dean, who served in the state House, won in the redrawn district in which Democrats outnumber Republicans.

Democrats picked up another seat when Chrissy Houlahan flipped the state’s 6th District, defeating Republican Greg McCauley.

The two candidates each ran to replace Republican Rep. Ryan Costello, who decided not to seek re-election.

In the 7th District, Democrat Susan Wild won the race against Republican Marty Nothstein 53-43 percent with 67 percent of precincts reporting at 10:15 p.m. EST.

They sought to replace Republican incumbent Charlie Dent, who announced his retirement from Congress in September 2017.

The state’s redrawn districts did not represent a total loss for Republicans. Guy Reschenthaler defeated Democrat Bibiana Boerio in the new 14th District in western Pennsylvania.

Reschenthaler campaigned on economic issues, border security and reforms to Social Security.
