(CN) – In a bid to take control of the House of Representatives, Democrats picked up a second seat in Florida with the victory of Debbie Mucarsel-Powell over incumbent Republican Rep. Carlos Curbelo in the state’s 25th Congressional District.
Mucarsel-Powell narrowly led the race by 3,000 votes when the Associated Press called it shortly before 11 p.m. EST. A former dean at Florida International University, she ran on the message of improved healthcare and new immigration policies.
Curbelo, who has held the seat since 2012, positioned himself as a more moderate Republican in a district where Hillary Clinton won by 15 points in the 2016 presidential election. The win signifies the Democrats getting closer to winning a House majority.
