Defense Magazine Pursues Info on Troops’ Body Armor

WASHINGTON (CN) - A reporter claims the Pentagon has blown off his FOIA requests for information on injuries suffered by U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Roger Charles, a retired Marine officer and editor of Defense Watch, fears troops are "being sent into harm's way with substandard ballistic protection from small arms fire," and says the Pentagon has recalled more than 16,000 sets of body armor.

"The topic is of special and current public interest, especially considering that the Secretary of the Army recently recalled more than 16,000 sets of body armor following a DoD Inspector General Audit," the complaint states.

Charles also is vice president of Soldiers For The Truth, a nonprofit group found by the late Col. David Hackworth, a much decorated military veteran and journalist.

Charles is represented by Andrew Genser with Kirkland & Ellis of New York, N.Y.
