BANGOR, MAINE (CN) - Hannaford supermarkets, a major New England grocery chain, "allowed a third party to obtain consumer credit card and debit card information from its computer system," resulting in 1,800 reports of fraud and as many as 4.2 million stolen account numbers, a class-action complaint claims in Federal Court.
Plaintiffs claim Hannaford's "allowed" the computer intrusion on Feb. 27 and did not announce it until March 17, when it stated that "a data intrusion into its computer network [has occurred] that resulted in the theft of customer credit and debit card numbers."
Also sued is Hannaford's corporate parent, Delhaize America dba Sweetbay.
