Data Breach Alleged at Children’s Hospital

SAN DIEGO (CN) - Rady Children's Hospital disclosed confidential medical information about more than 20,000 patients, a class action claims in Superior Court.

Lead plaintiff Sami Shamon claims that a Rady employee on June 6 sent an email to four undisclosed people who have nothing to do with the hospital. The mails contained an attachment with medical records on 14,121 patients, according to the lawsuit.

"Furthermore, one or more of these four individuals proceeded to forward the email with the attached private medical information to other undisclosed parties who were again neither employed with nor related to defendant business," the complaint states.

When the hospital investigated, it found that another data breach had exposed medical records of another 6,307 patients, Shamon claims.

Shamon seeks class certification and statutory damages.

She is represented by Abbas Kazerounian.
