WEST PALM BEACH (CN) - Comedian Dane Cook has asked a Florida court to recognize a $12 million judgment that a Massachusetts court entered against his half-brother and former manager for embezzling.
Darryl McCauley, Dane Cook's half-brother and former longtime manager, was arrested in 2008 for stealing more than $11 million from the entertainer's personal and business bank accounts.
Two years later, McCauley, a former corrections officer, pleaded guilty to larceny, embezzlement and forgery charges. In addition to a five-year sentence, the court ordered McCauley to repay Cook $12 million, according to the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office.
McCauley's wife Erika, 39, was sentenced to 2 1/2 after pleading guilty to larceny charges connected to the same scheme.
McCauley lived in Massachusetts when the crime occurred. Boston-born Cook has reportedly spent the last 16 years living in Los Angeles.
Last week, the comedian's company Great Dane Enterprises filed an affidavit of foreign judgment for recognition in Florida seeking to "domesticate" the $12 million settlement.
McCauley, 47, and his wife, used Cook's money to travel, invest, and buy real estate and jewelry, prosecutors said.
Cook discovered the betrayal after he hired a new business manager in 2008, according to court records.
