Dallas Is Still Waiting for Its Bus

DALLAS (CN) - Waiting-room and other problems will force low-cost, intercity bus line Megabus to wait for its long-awaited debut in Dallas, as the city called its downtown stop illegal, in a letter from the city attorney.

The Coach USA-owned bus line will move its local stop to a Coach USA facility at 710 Davis St. in the suburb of Grand Prairie, according to the Megabus website.

Touting more than 18 million customers and frequently offering free or $1 tickets, Megabus has provided bus service in the Northeastern United States and Canada for several years. It will begin nonstop service from Dallas to Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Oklahoma City and other regional cities, beginning Tuesday.

The original stop, a commercial parking lot on Elm Street between North Olive Street and South Pearl Street, constitutes a "commercial bus station and terminal" under City Code, the ctiy attorney's letter stated.

A certificate of occupancy is needed, but the bus line cannot apply for one until it provides a "lobby or waiting room, which must have a floor area of not less than 200 square feet with at least one seat for every 25 square feet of floor area," and widens the driveways of the parking lot to accommodate bus traffic, among other things. The city said its requirements are meant to be "helpful" and not an exhaustive list of laws.

Megabus said it moved the stop to Grand Prairie because "the required facility changes at the downtown location will not be completed by June 19."
