D.C. Circuit Tosses|Bush Air Standards

(CN) - The D.C. Circuit on Tuesday agreed with California and 17 other states that claimed the Bush administration illegally relaxed air standards for fine particulates - a move California Attorney General Jerry Brown said was "justified by nothing more than junk science."

Fine particulates can lodge permanently in the lungs and cause chronic respiratory disease, particularly in children and old people.

The Bush administration rejected the advice of EPA scientists and wrote its own, weaker standards. The court remanded the regulations to the EPA.
