D.C. Circuit Rejects Cove Point Gas Plant Expansion

WASHINGTON (CN) - The D.C. Circuit agreed to halt the expansion of a natural gas plant in Maryland after a local distribution company complained that the project would cause "severe leakage" throughout its distribution system.

Washington Gas Light challenged the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's approval of Dominion Resources' plan to expand a its liquefied natural gas plant in Cove Point, Md.

The appeals court attributed any risk of increased leaks to defects in Washington Gas Light's system. However, the judges granted the company's petition for review, saying the evidence did not support the commission's conclusion that Washington Gas Light would be able to address the safety concerns before the project's projected completion date in November.
