VENTURA, Calif. (CN) - CVS Pharmacy will pay $13.8 million to settle claims that it violated state laws for disposing of hazardous waste, district attorneys said in a statement.
Forty-four California district attorneys and city attorneys in Los Angeles and San Diego investigated and then sued CVS in Ventura County Court, after hearing that environmental officials in Connecticut were investigating CVS there. The lead investigator in California, the Ventura County District Attorney's Office, said in a statement that the violations occurred for 7 years at hundreds of CVS stores in California, including Long's Drug Stores, which chain CVS bought and rebranded.
A Ventura County judge ordered CVS to pay $13.75 in civil penalties and costs, and another $31,750 to Nevada County.
