Cut It Out, Spybot Maker Tells Best Buy

MARSHALL, TEXAS (CN) - Best Buy's "Geek Squad" computer techs use the Spybot Search & Destroy program without permission, enhancing Best Buy's reputation at the copyright holder's expense, Safer Networking claims in Federal Court. Safer says it distributes Spybot free to individuals, but not to businesses that can profit from it.

Safer says Best Buy advertises that it can rid customers' computers of spyware and malware, and charges for it, and instructs its Geek Squad to use Spybot to do this.

Safer demands damages for trademark and copyright violations, unfair competition and tortious interference. It is represented by Robin Gibbs of Houston.
