Customs Officer Arrested on the Job

SAN DIEGO (CN) - A Customs officer was arrested on the job Friday and charged with conspiring to bring aliens to the United States for financial gain, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Hector Rodriguez was arrested while working at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, prosecutors said in a statement. Also arrested and charged were Gerardo Rodriguez and Vanessa Moya, who allegedly drove undocumented people through an inspection lane manned by Hector Rodriguez.

Hector Rodriguez, 45; Vanessa Moya, 29, both of San Diego; and Gerardo Rodriguez, 42, of Chula Vista, were due in Federal Court today for their first appearance.

Gerardo Rodriguez is accused of informing the other defendants of his work schedule, and entering false information into federal records as they drove their "clients" through his lane.

Gerardo Rodriguez made thousands of dollars from the human smuggling, and gave Hector Rodriguez "the use of luxury automobiles, apartment rent payments and other bribes," according to the U.S. attorney's statement.
