Crooks Try to Slam Madoff Victims Again

WASHINGTON (CN) - The SEC warns that a phony Web site is phishing for IDs by claiming it has recovered $1.3 billion from Bernard Madoff, and asking for victims' personal information. The Internet scam claims to come from the "International Security Investor Protection Corporation" (ISIPC), which does not exist, but is modeled after the Securities Investor Protection Corporation's (SIPC) Web site, mimicking its look, feel and content, the SEC says.

The ISIPC Web site claims to work with several governments, including the United States, and contains links to actual government Web sites, the SEC says. ISIPC also falsely claims to be sponsored by the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank.

Whoever is running ISIPC is actually looking for personal information to "rip off financial fraud victims" again, the SEC says.
