SANTA ANA, Calif. (CN) - A 66-year-old doctor was sentenced Monday to 18 months in federal prison for submitting $1 million in bills for cancer drugs he never provided. Dr. Glen R. Justice, of Corona del Mar, billed Medicare and private insurers for the drugs he never administered, prosecutors said.
Justice pleaded guilty in March to 5 counts of health care fraud. He ran the Pacific Coast Hematology/Oncology Group in Fountain Valley, and billed patients injectable cancer he drugs he never gave them, and sometimes billed for more expensive drugs than he provided. He did this for at least 5 years, from 2004 through 2009, even though his staff warned him about it and his medical group was searched with a warrant in 2006, prosecutors said.
And that's not all: "During today's sentencing hearing, Justice did not contest government allegations that he had violated his plea agreement by continuing to submit fraudulent bills after he signed the agreement in March 2010," the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a statement on Monday.
U.S. District Judge Cormac Carney also ordered Justice to pay $1,004,689 in restitution. After he pays that, and does his time, then Justice will be done - with his sentence.
