Credit Suisse Slammed With|Record $2.6 Billion Fine

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (CN) - Credit Suisse banks will pay a $2.6 billion fine for helping U.S. citizens duck taxes - the highest fine ever in a criminal tax case, the Justice Department said Monday.

Credit Suisse AG pleaded guilty Monday to conspiring to aid and assist U.S. taxpayers to file false federal tax returns.

Eight Credit Suisse executives have been indicted since 2011; two have pleaded guilty.

The Swiss bank will pay $1.8 billion to the Department of Justice for the U.S. Treasury, $100 million to the Federal Reserve, and $715 million to the New York State Department of Financial Services.

The plea agreement was filed Monday in Alexandria, Va., Federal Court.

Credit Suisse already has paid the SEC $196 million in disgorgement, interest and penalties for securities violations.
