Credit, ID Theft Scam Sounds Easy

BROOKLYN (CN) - A Brooklyn man faces up to 30 years in prison after admitting he stole credit reports and used them to steal hundreds of people's identities and hundreds of thousands of dollars. It sounds easy. Banky Adebanjo said his Id theft ring sent letters to TransUnion, purporting to be from their victims, and had the credit reporting agency send the victims' credit reports to his PO boxes.

Adebanjo, 37, used the reports to get credit from banks. Police found $796,865 in cash and money orders in his safe deposit box after arresting him. They also found a passport he obtained in someone else's name. Adebanjo must forfeit the money and also may be fined up to $1 million. His sentencing date in Federal Court has not yet been set.

Adebanjo also used or uses the names Bankole Adetayo and Kurt Konigsberger.
