Crabs May Leave Western Aleutians for Processing

WASHINGTON (CN) - The National Marine Fishery Service will allow fishermen of the golden king crab to transfer their catch to processors outside of the Western Aleutian Islands because the only processor in their fishery, in the town of Adak, Alaska filed for bankruptcy.

Under the Bering Sea/Aleutian Islands Crab Rationalization Program, golden king crab harvested within the West region of the fishery must be delivered to a processor in that region of the Aleutian Islands.

There are only two catcher vessels in the fishery, which was established to ensure that communities that were historically active as processing ports remain active.
