Courts Close as Blizzard Looms for the Northeast

(CN) - Winter Storm Juno shuttered several courthouses, schools and state offices along the Eastern Seaboard on Monday, and the worst of the storm has yet to arrive.

According to the National Weather Service, the epic storm is expected to dump up to 3 feet of snow up until late Tuesday night, bringing with it strong winds that will "combine with the snow to create blizzard conditions."

The 1st and 2nd Appellate divisions, along with all New York City courts, the courts on Long Island and those in the counties of Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester, N.Y., closed early at 3 p.m. Monday, and will remain closed Tuesday. Jurors state-wide are asked not to report to court Tuesday.

All New York state offices closed early at 3 p.m. Monday, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo called for a state of emergency for at least a dozen counties in that state, including those in the Metropolitan New York City area.

Both federal courts in Brooklyn and Central Islip closed early Monday. At press time, a decision hadn't been made on whether those courts will be open Tuesday. Those with business to conduct in those courts are asked to call (866) 752-7362 in the morning for updates or by visiting https://www.nyed.uscourts.gov/news/weather-notice.

All New Jersey state courts and offices will be closed Tuesday. Courts and its offices closed early on Monday.

All three federal courts in Massachusetts will be closed Tuesday, according to its website.

The Eastern District of Pennsylvania also closed early Monday afternoon, but as of 3 p.m. there was no word yet if the chief justice there had called for a day off on Tuesday, a clerk said.

Federal courts in Bangor and Portland, Me., will be closed Tuesday and, weather permitting, will re-open Wednesday morning. Updates can be found at www.med.uscourts.gov or by calling 207-780-3356 or (207) 945-0575.

Connecticut federal court's schedule remained unchanged, and plans to keep regular business hours through Tuesday, a clerk said Monday.

Delaware also remained open for regular hours on Monday, but anyone needing to do business there is asked to call (302) 573-6170 Tuesday morning to hear a pre-recorded message on whether the court will be closed.

All Albany area courts were operating normally as of press time.

More than 3,500 scheduled flights for Monday and Tuesday have been cancelled, and those on flights that were not cancelled can experience severe delays, according to weather.com.

Governors in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island have declared states of emergency, according to that website.

New York City's mayor, Bill de Blasio, ordered all "non-essential" drivers off the roads from 11 p.m. Monday night. He also called for schools to be closed on close Tuesday.

Subway service in the city will be limited after 7 p.m. Monday night. Service on the Long Island Rail Road, which connects the city to Long Island, and Metro-North, which connects the city to New Jersey, will end at 11 p.m. Monday.

The mayor also ordered all city parks closed at 6 p.m. Monday.

The mayor also issued a coastal flood warning for most of the city.
