Courts Administrator Sues Texas County

GALVESTON, Texas (CN) - A veteran Texas courts administrator claims that Galveston County fired her for telling the district attorney that a judge had bugged spaces where attorneys conferred with inmates.

Bonnie Quiroga sued Galveston County on Dec. 9 in Galveston County Court, under state whistleblower and labor laws.

Quiroga says she worked for the county for 30 years, the last 14 of them as director of justice administration, before she was fired on July 24.

She claims that County Judge Mark Henry fired her that day, telling her, "I don't have three votes to keep you," referring to the five-member County Commissioners Court.

Quiroga claims that Henry did not have the power to fire her, and that he did it because the day before, she had told the district attorney that Henry "had caused confidential spaces (i.e., those used by defense counsel and inmates) to be 'bugged' by the installation of recording devices."

She seeks damages for constitutional violations and age and gender discrimination.

She is represented by Mark Stevens, of Galveston.
