Court Won’t Stop Detroit Mayor Removal Hearing

DETROIT (CN) - The Michigan Court of Appeals denied a last-ditch request to stop Gov. Jennifer Granholm from holding a hearing on removing embattled Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.

Kilpatrick has been accused of misleading city council members when he settled lawsuits with former police officers for $8.4 million and for lying about his sexual relationship with his chief of staff.

The mayor tried to block the hearing, claiming Granholm is prejudiced against him.

The appeals court also ruled that Kilpatrick can take off a tether he has worn since last month, but cannot travel outside the Detroit area.
