LUXEMBOURG (CN) - Greece's refusal to recognize diplomas conferred by other countries violates European Community legislation, the Court of Justice ruled.
The European Commission sued the Greek government after 37 people complained that the country was not recognizing degrees conferred by other countries based on agreements with Greek institutions.
Europe's highest court agreed with the Commission's assertions that countries in the European Community have to trust each other to award diplomas properly.
"The host Member State cannot examine the basis on which the diplomas have been awarded," the court ruled.
The court also found that the government did not allow aptitude tests to make up for any discrepancies between Greek degrees and degrees given by other nations.
