Court Orders Disclosure Of School-Funding Memo

TRENTON, N.J. (CN) - The New Jersey Appellate Division ordered the state Department of Education to release an internal document outlining its funding structure to the Education Law Center.

The law center wanted the information for its work representing children in ongoing lawsuits over the adequacy of school funding for the state's poorest districts.

The department initially released more than 900 pages of documents, some of which had been partially redacted. One was a 12-page memo detailing the "state aid simulation results for three funding formula structures," with all but one formula redacted.

The appellate court affirmed a ruling ordering the DOE to release the memo in its entirety, saying the document is subject to disclosure under the Open Public Records Act. See ruling.
